November 20 2009

After using a 15 inch wheel for the last few years, I have decided to revert back to an 18 inch.
Using the K1100 wheel I now have 4 piston callipers, a larger disc & I can remove the wheel without dis-mantling the complete brake system.
Will be testing the set-up this weekend before my trip to the east coast next Wednesday.
PS: The slope on the swing arm is not as bad as it looks in the photo

November update

Time for an update, not being happy with my old motor in chair, I have lashed out and bought K1100LT-SE with 94.000 klm & fitted this to my chair. Moved the chair 2 inches forward & built a camping swag to carry on the chair. In the photos I remove the seat for to carry the swag on trips.
Will be using it for the trip to Russ's book launch & visit to friends in Melbourne, Merimbula, Bega, Canberra, Sydney & the Blue Mountains.
Will be traveling with "Smeghead"

2009 Border Run update

26 July; Beetle, McArdell & others have arrived, McArdell with a slipping clutch. 10 for tea at the pub.
Monday, remove McArdell's rear end & gear box, new clutch plate & push rod oil seal arrive by bus & Port Pirie 730 pm, Beetle leaves for Fowlers Bay, Vince, Russ & Kathy arrive 12 for tea & the pub.

Tuesday, McArdell's bike is rebuilt, some of us do a museum run to Kadina & Wallaroo by car. 10 for a McArdell cooked tea at home, silver side, sauce & veggie's.

Wednesday, all leave for Border Run, first stop Pt Augusta for a side car tyre for Vince, a 460 x 17 road tyre. Cowell caravan park for the night, booked in to a cabin then told NO DOGS ALLOWED ON SITE, so Vince & I & Smeghead leave and book into the Jade Motel, dog allowed into room, no problem.

Thursday, all leave by separate ways, Vince & I to Elliston caravan park for the night, the rest to Streaky Bay.

Friday, all together again at Penong Hotel, full house pub & caravan park, new cook, not as good as 3 years ago, dog allowed into hotel room, good nights party by all.
Vince inspects side car tyre fitted at Pt Augusta, at 780 klms, it is as bald as Vince s forehead. After many phone calls Graham Jones brings him a used knobby from Ceduna, and 3 tyres ( one for Slab & 2 for Vince) are sent from Pt Augusta to the Border by truck.

Saturday, arrive Border Village Hotel, over 150 bikes are counted in rooms & camped across the road. Pick up tyres, no known brake downs recorded, McArdell still has a slipping clutch.

Sunday, Vince & I head back to Wudinna caravan park for the night, top class meal, basic van for accommodation

Monday, back to Pt Augusta where Vince fits a new tyre to the rear & the side car, the knobby has lasted with no applicable wear. Onto home at Gladstone.

Tuesday, Vince leaves for Sydney & I await the arrival of Russ, Kathy & Slab for the night.

Border Run 2009

Sunday 1 pm 26 July, waiting for people to arrive, rear deck has a roof over & all is ready.
So far, Vince left Sydney Saturday AM via outfit.
Russell's Yamaha has failed to proceed out of Albury, NSW, binding rear brake, funny rattle in motor & the lights fail to work, is proceeding via the Suzuki, expect him here Monday night the same as Vince.
Phone call from McArdell at 1030 this morning, he is in Clare with a slipping clutch, hoping to replace this arvo at my place @ Gladstone, I have 3 on the shelf for him to pick from.
My outfit is ready to go if Vince does not arrive, I have not road tested it yet but here's hoping all is well.

July 10 2009 update

Time to update my banner on this site as I have sold the MZ.
New dog 'Smeghead' is coming along well, house trained and chewing everything in site. Looking forward to the Border Run in August, will be traveling in Vince's side car with the dog for company. Possible stops will be Cowel, Coffin Bay, Penong on Friday night, will talk it over with Vince when he arrives in Gladstone.
I hope the rain stops by then otherwise it will be a wet trip.

One dog gone and anouther arrives

Redone Sunday 24 May 2009 , Sally had to go to the farm to chase sheep and chooks, so now I have a Fox Terrier cross Jack Russell,10 weeks old, brindle in colour, male, called "Smeghead" as soon as it stops moving around I will take a photo for all to see & post.
See here the photo.

Every one meet Sally, a 2 year old Border Collie X bitch, a little bit bigger then Buster, and quite hyper active at the moment, soon to travel by side car throughout Australia.
(If the side car tests OK)

RIP Buster 1997-2009

Today Thursday 16 April 2009 at 3.15 pm, Buster has gone to that big kennel in the sky.
Has traveled to the following runs in my K100 side car:
Karuah River Rally
2 OCR's; Innamincka & Urandangi
6 Border Runs
3 trips to Tibooburra
Far Cairn Rally
1 Victorian BMW club rally
3 BMWOCSA Rallys
6 Victorian side car Rallys
Numerous SA rallys & runs.
Over 10 years has probably done about 100,000 klms by side car around the back blocks of Australia.
Will be missed by all.

Friday 27 March 2009

Well today at 11 am the K100 motor after a lot of thought (3 days fiddling to be exact) was fired up, a little smoke but that soon cleared. A short road test and all was well. Now to find the time & money and go for a little trip, will do a few days road testing around home first.

24 March 2009

Well I have spent the last week rebuilding the side car. I am using the K100 motor that I took out in 2001 to replace with the K1100.
I have put the K1100 starter motor clutch into the K100 as the K100 one needed replacing, as was the reason of going to K1100 7 years ago (how time flies)
Have used the wiring harness & butterfly body from the K100RT I bought in Wagga some time ago, ( Vince got the fairing & Beetle got the motor)
Found all the connections, used the best looking ICU & FIU I had, charged up the battery and fired it up. All lights etc. work, motor turns over,
I have fuel pressure & spark but no fuel injection.
Have tried every combination of the 3 ICU & 2 FCU I have but still no fuel injection.
The fuel injection relay gets power and is controlled through the ICU then the FCU, both units I am not able to check nor fathom out how they work.
If I can not get onto Frank Warner of Sydney, I am stuffed, will have to wait till I sell the block of land & buy another K1100 complete bike (or win lotto).
Well I still have the MZ.

March 5 2009 at 10.15 am

Well the car is back on the road, used motor of about 130,000 klm & a new radiator, all up about $2000.
Vince of Sydney has not arrived, his BMW has broken down AGAIN, after the K1100 the only thing BMW about all the new bikes are the tank badges. IMHO
Today I was to do some concreting, BUT it is dropping water out of the sky, I think it is called rain!
Saw my old mate Graheme Cook on TV, he is station manager at Casey in Antarctica, have known him since he was 11 years old, (1963) I had to give him instruction on his movement from the Cubs to the Boy Scouts, I was a 19 year old Rover Scout then my self. Sent him an email & he rang me back on the mobile, it was good to here from him.
That's all for now.

17 Febuary 3pm

Over night visitor, Beetle (Brian) Bayley arrived 805pm on Monday ferrying an ex NSW police R1200/P from Sydney to Perth, 1400 klm in 12 hours, Vince's front door in Sydney to my front door in Gladstone SA, left here this morning at 8am heading west.
Since the side car motor is stuffed, I have decided on a complete overhaul. Have modified the front down brace (under the steering head) to make it easier to remove the radiator. All it now needs is a newer bike to fit side car too. Will add a photo shortly.
Thats all for now.

Week horibulis

I do not like rushing things, but sh*t happens, I bought the 1995 Falcon be cause I was not happy how the Magna was over heating.
The Falcon was showing no signs of over heating or loosing water, BUT it blew the head gasket on Monday & it looks like it will cost a packet to fix.
So I went home to finish putting the side car back together & put 3 months rego on it, took it for a run, 8 klm when at 110 klm/hour the inlet cam stopped turning & it looks like I have bent valves on 2 cylinders & could also have cracked pistons, on advice of others the motor is stuffed so I am down to only having the MZ as transport for awhile.
If all goes well the Falcon will be back on the road by the end of February, the bike can wait till the land is sold.
So I will be on the look out for a K1100RT this winter.
Enough for now.
4 February 2009 at 7.45pm
Put the timing chain cover, tappet cover & crankshaft covers back on the K1100 side car today before it got to hot, now need to put the front end back in, fit handlebars & fairing, road test, oil & filter change & the bike will be ready for another 2 years of use.
The timing cover was off to fix an oil leak that was with this motor when I fitted it 6 years ago (gawd how time flys), you can not rush these things.
It needs to be ready by easter for a possible run some where.
Expecting John C (from Bendigo Vic.) & mate from the UK any day now for a visit, better get some more Port in store.
When it cools down some more will get back to pouring some concrete & putting up the fence between the 2 blocks of land. Thats all for now, cut Ya tracks.

Climbing shots

Friday 30 January 2009, 10.45am.
Posted link to climbing shots at "Fotki.com" click on the slide show button, upper right or just view each photo, some of them are slides taken back in the 1960 to 1974 with a camera that had a bad light meter built in. I will add more photos when I get enthused enough. Have to start concentrating on the side car & house/yard/fence when it cools down again.
Well I can post a photo to the blog, but I can not work out how to set up another slide show of climbing shots only, I keep getting the bike photos mixed with them.

This is a test post from flickr, a fancy photo sharing thing.
Have found out how to use more slide shows, the climbing ones are not mine, now need to set my own shots up & another slide show of bike touring shots as well.
Stay tuned for more.

1971 Alpine Rally

Wednesday 28 January 2009, just a short story from days past, hope you enjoy the read.

ALPINE RALLY 1971

Pete Jenkins and Paul (Dogs) Macarthy
Macquarie Fields, south of Liverpool Friday night
Paul, on a BSA 650 twin & on 'P' plates, restricted to 50 MPH (80 KPH), left home about 3 pm on Friday afternoon.

Myself, on a BMW R60/5 short wheel base, left after work from home at 6 pm.
No dual highways then, just the 2 lanes and bottle necks all the way to Yass, our meeting place.
I caught and passed Paul about 38 miles (60 kay) east of Yass.
Paul found me in a cafe with coffee warming myself in front of the wood fire at 10pm.
We left Yass at 1030 pm and headed south on the road to Wee Jasper sealed to the intersection
at the bridge where you head over the bridge to Wee Jasper (about 20K), we headed on the dirt straight ahead sign posted to Canberra. After a few miles (about 10K) we turned left for a short while (about 20K) then turned right on to the road to Piccadilly Circus, over the hill and down into the Brindebella valley turning left (south) before the bridge and camped at the side of the road a mile or so along, about 2 am in the morning.
Saturday morning found us with a nice coating of ice over everything. The BSA started first kick, not so the BMW, had to cut a piece of wire out of the fence to use as a tow rope.
We then proceeded down the road to the end, as the map showed the might be a way over the river, no such luck, dead end.
We then proceeded back to the road over the bridge, then turn south again on to the road to Rules point, no gate and unknown territory for both of us.
A good ride down to rules point where there were road works everywhere on the Alpine Way, turned left up to the Kiandra hotel for a well earned beer, feed and to refuel. Meet other BMWTCNSW members who had come down via Cooma.

We then drifted down to the camp site under the bridge at Yarangabilly. There were large piles of fire wood there then from the road works, large campfires every where burning all night.
In the morning I did not start the BM until it was in the sun and I had boiled up 4 billies of water to throw over the motor, it then started first push of the button.

Myself and another 2 members on a R75/5 decided that Sunday night dance at the Wee Jasper hall was the go. Paul headed back home via Cooma with a couple of members.
Up over Talbingo mountain (dirt) where Dave Thompson had came to grief on his R60/2, no injuries except to the bike, we headed on to the dirt after Tumut just as the sun went down, quite a hairy ride keeping up to the 750 in the dark dodging wombats, he knew the road I didn't!
Made it to Wee Jasper for a late tea, set up camp in a caravan behind the shop then around to the dance in the hall
Entrance fee 1 shilling and 6 pence (15 cents), 6 people, 1 record player and 4 rock & roll 45's
We had had enough after 30 minutes, back to the caravan and a few beers.
The next day an uneventful ride back up the Hume to Picton, thence via the back road to Campbelltown and home.
PJ alies Grandad

Presentation of badges, yes that is Paul Evens of the BMWTCNSW to the right & my R60/5 & Paul Giles the Alpine rally starter in the middle.
Wednesday 28 January 2009, 9.15am
My first attempt at a better header. I will change the 2 photos of the bikes for better shots later, when it cools down in the shed a bit.
Tuesday 27 January 2009 21.40pm
Need to find out how to add another slide show (of climbing shots), keeps getting mixed with "Bikes I Have Owned".
Side car is off the road in maintenance mode at the moment, will add photo of it and the new bike the MZ Scorpion shortly.
A bit too hot at this time.

Monday 26 January 2009, 9.40pm
This is a test to see how I can add notes with photos, so lets see what happens.
I will try and add some photos from my climbing days with info.
This is called "Tombstone Wall" a grade 15 at Mt Pidington in the Blue mountains at Mt Victoria, a climb I have done plenty of times, even in Kastinger Mountain boots, this shot was with climbing shoes, ie; like racing slick tyres. This shot I am about 6mts. off the ground heading diagonally up to the right on very small foot holds.
I would now head up towards the sky line, to a belay (rest point) just out of sight directly above me about another 6mts. or so.
Sunday 25 January 2009, 4.45pm, slide show finished, started to add mile stones of my life to the left pane. Of cause more to follow, need to retrieve some brain cells.
Sunday 25 January 2009 11.15am
Slide show shows some of the bikes I have owned over the years, not all are original, Not showing bikes repaired & sold for profit
Saturday 24 January 2009 at 8.45 am.
This page is under construction, photos of bikes are not necessarily actual photos of the ones I owned, but are in order of ownership. I have left out bikes I have rebuilt for re sale.
Variety is the spice of life.
